With businesses generating enormous amounts of information that must be stored, protected, and managed electronically, it is crucial that a company’s computing infrastructure be structured in such a way that allows for efficient use of IT resources. If a business is unable to access and manage the data that they generate, then the data itself is of no use to the company and the resources that were expended to collect the data were used in vain. In order to improve the methods by which information is stored, organized, and accessed, improvements such as the Dell converged infrastructure have allowed for the increasingly centralized performance of computing tasks.

A converged infrastructure is an example of how Dell enterprise solutions improve the efficiency of a business. A converged infrastructure combines the various different tasks of IT resources, such as data storage, data processing, and security, into one place, thus improving the utility of existing resources by running all functions in one place rather than utilizing only a fraction of fractured computing resources found in multiple locations.

Converged infrastructures employ the logic of a utility knife, such as the classic Swiss Army knife. The idea behind a utility knife is to enable the person who possesses the knife to respond to a variety of problems and situations without having to invest in many different problem-specific tools. Sure, it might be better to buy tools for each specific circumstance because it is likely that you will have tools of a superior quality if you get a tool that is built to specialize in one specific task. For example, it might be a better idea to have a Phillips-head screwdriver as well as a normal screwdriver for tightening different screws and a serrated blade for performing the task of cutting a small branch instead of having only one blade that must be used for both cutting down the branch and turning a screw. The single blade would get both jobs done, but it would not do either job as well as a tool specific to the task would be able to. However, there are many situations in which one would have to address a diverse range of issues but at the same time it would be unreasonable to carry around multiple tools. For example, one may encounter problems requiring many different kinds of tools while mountain biking, but it would be ineffective to carry around all of the tools required while mountain biking because carrying all the individual tools would be too heavy. A utility knife, however, makes all of the separate tools available without the excessive weight by integrating all the separate tools into one structure.

By applying this same approach to the various computing needs of a business, it makes sense to take advantage of converged infrastructure techniques to conserve resources and lower costs by consolidating all IT resources into one centralized locations. Converged infrastructure can eliminate the need to power local drives on computers that are connected to the converged infrastructure, which can greatly reduce power needs. This is just one of many reasons why many businesses are noticing the practicality of switching to a converged infrastructure.

When you’re planning to manufacture products, you must first determine whether you want to do it overseas or domestically. Each approach has its share of advantages and disadvantages. In the case of the United States, it’s a lot easier to move your manufacturing overseas due to the high staffing and costs that come with domestic production. The wage a group of people might accept varies widely depending on the changes in currency from one country to another. Some countries’ citizens have different standards of living and can survive on less money than you might expect. Companies take advantage of these cultural and currency differences to help them save money in the long run.

A company that decides to manufacture their products overseas will have to do a lot of work to improve the image of their product in their home country. People have the perception of products manufactured in other countries as being somehow of a lower quality. While this might have been true in a different era, it’s quickly becoming a thing of the past. Currently, the only difference between products manufactured overseas and products manufactured domestically is the location in which they were manufactured. Companies that come out with high quality products aren’t going to change their approach in a different location.

The manufacturing standards in one country are unique compared to the rest of the world. The government of the country in which a company decides to establish their business might not provide as much oversight as the government of the company’s home country. This discrepancy often results in labor violations and a perception that a company doesn’t care about their employees. The idea that companies run sweat shops in other parts of the world is the furthest thing from the truth. Every major company wants to look after their employees no matter where they’re located.

Customers of companies who manufacturer their products overseas might have to deal with longer shipping times and customer service difficulties. A company can remedy this problem by having their foreign distributor ship their products to a domestic location. That way the customer won’t have to wait for the product they ordered to arrive from some far off land. It will make it seem like the company makes their products in their country of origin. Customers don’t like to wait for their product to arrive. It’s the companies’ responsibility to make this particular type of wait time as short as possible.

When your company is deciding if some of production overseas make sure you look at all angles. For instance in the case of balloon manufacturing you would need to look at production and delivery time, quality control, and rules for producing the products in your home country. With any product you will want to evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of possibly moving some or all of your manufacturing overseas.

The following is a guest post by Gary Lightman at attorney in the United States who focuses on small business.

As a small business owner, you’re likely very familiar with the concept of doing your best to keep commitments. After all, you’ve already put so much of yourself into your business that you’ve probably started to see it as a natural extension of yourself. You believe that the way people feel about your business reflects on the type of person you are. For you, business is personal. Adding to the complexity is the fact that you’ve got your clients, your family, your creditors, and your employees—all of whom have some stake in the way your business is run. You have promises to keep to all of them, and making sure that you keep everyone satisfied is no easy task. While moving heaven and earth to fulfill all your promises should continue to be at the core of what you do, you might also ask yourself if all the promises you’re making are in the best legal interest of your business. There’s one promise in particular that you should never make—not only because it may actually be impossible to keep, but also because it can land you and your small business in legal hot water.

While there may be many promises that are legally imprudent to make, one in particular merits mention here: promising perpetual employment to one or more of your employees. As your business is just getting starting, this may seem like a natural promise to make; you likely employ friends or family, many of whom are willing to work for little pay. They’re laboring and sacrificing right along with you toward the common goal of helping your business succeed, so you may wonder why you shouldn’t promise them perpetual employment.

The promise is legally problematic (especially if you put it in writing) because it effectively reclassifies your employees from “at will” employees to “just cause” employees. “At will” is an arrangement that favors the employer—his or her employees can be let go at any time and for any reason, short of those specifically prohibited by law. On the other hand, “just cause” employees are guaranteed employment except in the event they create a legitimate reason for you to terminate them—in other words, the employee would have to engage in sexual harassment, theft, use drugs on the job, or participate in another type of similar behavior. This arrangement definitely favors the employee. While most employers don’t secretly think about firing employees left and right, terminating an employee can sometimes be the best move for the company. If you’ve inadvertently made one of your hires into a “just cause” employee, you’ve also just inadvertently made your company’s legal situation a bit trickier.

So save yourself a good deal of legal stress—don’t promise continued or perpetual employment. Reward hard work and treat your employees with kindness, but also recognize that no one knows everything that the future has in store.

Get Your Invention on the Market with the Big Ideas Worldwide Invention Contest!

Thomas Edison was quoted as saying that genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Inventors put in countless hours developing their inventions, but often the missing link is getting the invention to market. So how can inventors get help?

If you want to go it alone, you’ll have to raise money to build the product, hire a marketing and sales team, and hope it works. It’s a risky and challenging road. One of the quickest and easiest ways to get your product to market is through a licensing deal with a company that has experience taking products to market. A great way to get your invention in front of such a company is via an invention contest. Today we’re please to announce The Big Ideas Worldwide Invention Contest.

During the month of February xClosure is running a national search campaign to find 5 products to market nationally. Winning the contest involves 3 steps:

Fill out the application here before March 1st

10 finalists will present in person or via the web to a panel of live judges on March 21st

5 winners will be selected to have their product marketed

This is an opportunity to tap into the talent of an experienced marketing team. All product descriptions, details and files submitted are protected under a mutual NDA/non-compete/non-circumvent agreement to protect your idea and product. So take 10 minutes to fill out the application at http://www.xclosure.com/application-page and good luck!

When one considers the chaos in HR, what comes to mind first? Maybe hiring and firing, people issues, budget limitations, growth, PTO, payroll, regulations, policies and procedures, open enrollment, executive drama? The list never ends! There are so many tasks to juggle, and so few resources, that HR constantly scrambles to get things done. Human resources software, or the lack thereof, is likely the last thing that comes to mind…

Among the causes of chaos lies a sneaky, annoying cause that doesn’t get much attention but has a huge impact on a business in subtle ways – and that cause is inaccurate and poorly maintained data. If a firms most important asset is its people, why don’t firms do better with their data? After talking with thousands of SMB firms, and dealing with SMB data, I know – and we all know – that it’s typically a disaster, rarely complete, difficult to maintain, and doesn’t paint a clear strategic picture of what is really going on within the business.

With data in so many places (your head, your payroll, your benefit provider, multiple other data silos, paper-based systems, even post-it notes), lack of support from the executive level to improve your systems, and all the fires HR deals with, how can HR possibly have time to keep up with the flood data? As these little inaccuracies grow – such as a incorrect training record, PTO inaccuracies, an address change, an employee complaint, an accident – they become little fires and then big fires, until your time is consumed cleaning up the mess.

One reason employee data management is such is a hassle, is that the number one human resources tool for SMB’s is the good old spreadsheet, invented in 1979! Just think of how many times a week you touch a spreadsheet, update one, forward one, double – triple – quadruple check one, or start a new one? Why is HR still using spreadsheets when systems exist to take away all that inefficiency and pain?

Einstein allegedly said that the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. If HR wants to get out of the fires they deal with daily, and move to the strategy table that they say they want, then HR has to change! Have you looked lately at what is happening in HR technology? Maybe it’s time to jump on your favorite search engine and see what’s available.

The old, expensive, enterprise solutions are still out there selling to large firms with million dollar budgets. However, there are also new Software as a Service companies building Human Resources Software specifically for HR in the small to medium business. Human resource teams can move from their old-school spreadsheet past into today with efficient, accurate, human resource information systems where you rarely touch a spreadsheet, all of your data is in one secure place, you can share access easily, and you can get to it anytime and anywhere.

Technology is amazing, user interfaces are intuitive and easy to use, costs have gone down, and systems like BambooHR are growing fast because demand is high. HR can get rid of the pain caused by spreadsheets today, the hard dollar benefits will begin almost immediately, AND HR will have accurate data. Who woulda thought?

It’s time for firms to step out of their status quo of dealing with spreadsheets, and step into an incredible Human Resource software like BambooHR.

Key to the success of any business is market research. In order to know the needs and desires of customers you really have to do some research. You need to know price points, products, design, etc. Once you know what your customers like you can really cater to them.

Market research needs to be done regularly. Just doing market research every once in a while is not good enough. Trends are always changing, the economy is always changing, and your demographic is constantly changing. Keeping on top of all of this is incredibly important.

One way that market research can determine what products should sell is by watching sales. By analyzing sales they can determines which items sell the most. Analyzing sales can be done in a store by store basis as well as on a larger scale. This is important, because maybe you just need to see what you should be bringing in more of and what you should be bringing in less of.

Analyzing data can help determine the best price point as well. Just because something has a high retail value doesn’t mean that people want to pay full price and through analyzing sales data researchers can determine how much money it is actually sold for on average. This allows stores to set a price point for their store.

Market researchers also look into the demographics surrounding a company. This helps determine what the people can afford as well. Demographics include income and you can’t put a high end retail store near a bunch of trailer parks. It is not likely that your business will do well, so market research on demographics can be incredibly helpful.

Another way that market researchers gather information is through taking surveys. Surveys can be done in stores, via the internet, or over the phone. Some surveys are even done by mail, but these are less likely now-a-days. Surveys are a quick and simple way to gather a lot of different information. They delve into demographics, product, price, customer service, etc. Pretty much anything you can think of and usually with a “is there anything else you’d like to mention?” addendum. Those interested in taking surveys can find companies that are administering surveys from the best paid survey directory, and companies who wish to offer surveys can find people willing to take surveys to get market information.

When surveys are used to gather information a lot is accomplished and without a lot of excess research needed. There is no clutter to it; it’s just people answering specific questions that get the answers that you are looking for.

Implementing market research is essential to the success of a company. It helps to guide the company in the right direction and creates a lower risk of failure. Investing in market research is well worth it.

We often think of having a planned store concept as something reserved for the big guys. Part marketing, part psychology, and part interior design, environmental design can seem utterly baffling—the type of discipline that almost requires a specialized degree to even take a stab at. The truth is, as with many things that combine elements of art and science, it can be tricky to master, but anyone can understand the basics well enough to at least modestly improve the layout and aesthetics of their selling environment. Whether you employ the services of an interactive agency to assist with the professional design of products and banners, or you choose to do it yourself, you can use these 5 simple tips and see how you can make some simple changes!

Take the top-down approach

When was the last time you looked at a bird’s eye floor plan of your space? Too frequently we try to cram as much into our limited space as possible, thinking the more we have to offer, the more we’ll sell. Unless you’re a six year old trying to hide from your parents, stores that feel like mazes aren’t usually appealing. I suggest starting by comparing a diagram of your current floor plan with a diagram of your space that includes only permanent fixtures like walls, counters, doors, etc. This can be helpful to help you determine if your space is too cramped, and it gets your mind thinking of all the different ways you could be using all that space. Looking from the top down is essential for planning traffic flow, identifying bottle necks, and getting a true sense of what you have to work with.

Be a copycat

If you’re a smaller, local business you probably can’t afford to spend a million dollars on a study to determine how best to use your space to increase sales and improve customer experiences while ensuring that the average buyer spends precisely 12.7 minutes in your store. Luckily other people have done that already, and while they won’t just hand over the data to you, they always love showing off their cool interiors on their websites. Find out which is the best company in your category in the country, and look at what they do. Starbucks is a great example. They’ve spent millions figuring out the perfect layout and ambience for their stores. If you run a café or coffee house, look at how Starbucks has done it and borrow some of their cool ideas.

Know your neighborhood

You may be located in a downtown foot traffic zone, on the border of a quaint subdivision built in the ‘60’s, or on a street with six art galleries and four boutiques. And that really, really matters. If you don’t want to become the eye sore that people in the area complain about, you need to blend in. You can still stand out, but your store front and interior need to match the predominant aesthetic themes of your surroundings. Even Wal-Mart does this.

Change things up

Most customers respond well to fresh changes in today’s market. 30 years ago that wouldn’t have been true. They wanted the same old thing because it made them feel comfortable. Consumers are much more informed and aware today however, which makes them not only accepting of changes, but eager. Even baby boomers have proven enjoy change, provided the new elements cater to their specificneeds.

You should be looking at ways to modify your environment to some degree frequently. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to doing this because it varies based on your business, the market, and most importantly, your customers. If you manage a diner that has been a community fixture for 60 years, any changes should be relatively minimal, however if you’re a consumer goods retailer, you’ll want to make significant modifications relatively frequently. You can start planning for this by identifying which elements of your space you can change with low expense, and those which would cost more. Something easy could be searching for the coolest POS displays, while something a little more involved may include new carpet, shelving, and paint.
